What is a Heritage Custodian and Why You Need One
You’ve locked your front door. You’ve named someone in your will. You’ve sorted your insurance. But who’s looking after your digital memories?
A Heritage Custodian is the answer to a question most people haven’t thought to ask: “Who will manage my digital archive when I’m no longer here?”
The problem it solves
When someone passes away, their digital life usually follows one of two paths:
- Everything is lost - accounts expire, passwords are unknown, files are deleted
- Everything is dumped - a family member inherits a chaotic mess of files with no context or direction
Neither outcome is good. A Heritage Custodian ensures a third path: your archive is preserved, managed, and passed down intentionally.
What a Heritage Custodian is
A Heritage Custodian (HC) is a person you nominate to look after your digital memory archive when you’re no longer able to manage it yourself.
They are not:
- An executor (this isn’t a legal role)
- A co-owner (they can’t access your content while you’re alive)
- An editor (they can’t change or delete your memories)
They are:
- A guardian of your story
- The person who activates memorial mode when the time comes
- A curator who can add tributes on your behalf
- The bridge between your archive and your family
How it works
- You nominate your HC - provide their name and email, and optionally write a personal message
- They receive an invitation - a detailed email explaining the role and responsibilities
- They create an account - just like any other user
- While you’re alive - they cannot see your private content. They simply know they’ve been entrusted with this responsibility.
- When the time comes - they submit a memorial mode request
- After approval - your archive transitions to memorial mode:
- All Legacy-visibility memories become visible to family
- Sealed time capsules with memorial unlock are opened
- Your HC becomes a Curator
- The subscription is cancelled - the archive is preserved permanently at no cost
- All family members are notified
What a Curator can do
Once memorial mode is activated, your Heritage Custodian becomes a Curator. They can:
- View all Family and Legacy memories in your archive
- Add new memories (tributes) on your behalf
- Invite additional family members to view the archive
They cannot:
- Edit or delete your existing memories
- Change privacy settings on your content
- Create or modify time capsules
- Delete folders or restructure your archive
Your story stays exactly as you left it. They can only add to it.
Who to choose
The right Heritage Custodian is someone who:
- You trust completely - they’ll have access to your most personal memories
- Is likely to outlive you - typically someone younger
- Is digitally comfortable - they’ll need to use an online platform
- Understands why this matters - someone who values family history and memory
- Is reliable - they’ll need to take action when the time comes
Common choices:
- An adult child
- A younger sibling
- A trusted niece or nephew
- A close family friend
What if your HC can’t fulfil the role?
Life changes. You can update your Heritage Custodian at any time. If your nominated person is no longer suitable - or no longer willing - simply change the nomination in your settings.
Why it matters
Without a Heritage Custodian:
- Nobody knows your archive exists
- Nobody has permission to manage it
- Your memories may be lost or inaccessible
- Time capsules remain sealed forever
- Legacy content is never revealed to family
With a Heritage Custodian:
- Someone is ready and informed
- The transition is smooth and dignified
- Your family receives your legacy memories
- Time capsules unlock as intended
- Your archive is preserved permanently
